DEAF IS NOT DEATH

Have you ever found yourself in a cultural, religious or geographical location where no one understands your language and in a similar way you also don't understand any language spoken around these areas? How can your life impact the lives of others around you?

Many are the impressions, ideas, opinions and misconceptions that many people in society have about Deaf Persons, The Deaf Culture and Deaf Community. Deaf Persons are a fraction of the people in common, economic, political, religious, cultural and even this technological society.

There are different definitions and explanations about deafness but Deafness is basically characterized with a hearing impaired persons. Deafness is neither a disease nor a disgraceful canker. What are your views and impressions about the deaf?.

Do you know that Deaf Persons have a special and unique language called Sign Language?

I have been and still privileged to have a very good and close contact with Deaf Persons. Whilst we think, plan, meditate on various Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), have you asked yourself how Deaf Persons access quality healthcare services, education, financial services and freedom, career and job opportunities among other valuable things?

It will sadden your heart when you see, feel and acquire the experiments and results on ground about how deaf persons are treated in my side of the world(Ghana). Lots of rejections, massive discrimination among other negative reactions and treatments are meted out to Deaf Persons.

It would be of great surprise to you that, almost all big hospitals in Ghana do not have Sign Language Facilitators and Interpreters that will serve as mediators to help in effective communication and thereby helping Deaf Persons acquire healthcare. The story remains the same in other social and sensitive areas of life for the vulnerable deaf person.

Let's take few moments to reflect and meditate on these things. We are all vulnerable and that anyone can become deaf at any point in time.

I pray and employ us all to serve as advocate for Deaf People, help strengthen legal systems for the Deaf and help empower and equip all deaf Persons in order to promote society transformation, inspiration, mentoring and empowerment.

Just remember, Deaf Persons are capable to transform society. Do not forget that DEAF IS NOT DEATH (#DIND).
